Complex PCI using Impella/LVAD and Rotational Atherectomy – July 2009

Case: 85-year-old male with multivessel disease and a left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) of 20 percent, meaning that his heart’s left ventricle is only pumping 20 percent of its volume with each beat. Normal LVEF is typically 60 – 65 percent.
Plan: calls for rotational atherectomy, which uses a small rotating cutting blade threaded percutaneously into coronary arteries to open narrowed arteries and improve blood flow to or from the heart. That will be followed by the implantation of a drug-eluting stent. Impella Recovers 2.5 Device will be inserted to help maintain left ventricular support and to carry out this high-risk complex PCI in a safe manner.
